Automotive OEM GDI Engine Control
Discover how an Automotive OEM leveraged SimuQuest to accelerate development of a gasoline direct injection engine control application.
Project Description
A leading Automotive OEM partnered with SimuQuest to develop a comprehensive Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine control application from concept to in-vehicle integration within a compressed 20-month timeline. The project would leverage a custom Model-Based Design (MBD) process, created by SimuQuest, to streamline workflows and enable efficient development of a robust, production-ready engine control solution. Key objectives included meeting stringent performance and emissions standards, implementing on-board diagnostics, and ensuring full intellectual property ownership for the OEM.
Challenges
The OEM faced significant challenges in developing the GDI engine control application within a limited timeframe and without reliance on external suppliers for critical technologies. Developing the application required the team to incorporate detailed diagnostics and meet strict performance and emissions standards—all without compromising quality or timelines. With varying experience levels across the team, achieving rapid progress on both the application and required testing phases presented an additional layer of complexity. Additionally, SimuQuest needed to ensure the team could navigate and maintain ownership of the IP and all code elements of the GDI control system effectively.
Results
SimuQuest successfully guided the OEM from concept to a production-ready GDI engine control application, achieving full in-vehicle validation in 20 months. The custom MBD process enabled a streamlined development workflow, facilitating rapid iterations and testing phases while training the OEM’s in-house team in effective MBD practices. Combined with a continuous integration pipeline setup with Jenkins, the client significantly improved development efficiency. This streamlined approach enabled real-time reporting on integrations and test results, allowing for rapid iterations and quality improvements. The completed solution met all regulatory performance and emissions standards, included comprehensive on-board diagnostics, and empowered the OEM with complete IP ownership over the application.

Client Testimonials
“SimuQuest collaborated with us, helped us develop controls for engines that we had never developed controllers for before. I’ll say really quick turnaround times. Basically, we were able to leverage the true power of model based design for control systems.”
