Automotive OEM Traction Control
Discover how SimuQuest supported an electric motorbike manufacturer in developing traction control for eBikes according to ISO26262.
Project Description
SimuQuest partnered with an electric motorbike manufacturer to develop and implement ISO 26262 safety and functional requirements for their traction control system. Over a focused three-month period, SimuQuest worked closely with the client’s electronics, controls, and software teams to establish a compliant Model-Based Design (MBD) framework for traction control. This included building out a control algorithm and defining safety processes tailored to meet the high standards required in electric vehicle safety.
Challenges
The client had limited experience with the ISO 26262 safety process and faced additional challenges due to a lack of prior traction control development for electric bikes. Meeting the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL D) standards within a short timeframe required creating rigorous safety analyses, including Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies, and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The challenge also extended to creating a reliable traction control system that would meet the functional and safety needs of electric motorbike applications.
Results
SimuQuest enabled the client to implement an ISO 26262-compliant safety process for their traction control system, ensuring a high standard of reliability and operational safety. Through a series of deliverables, including the ISO 26262 process guide, ASIL D safety requirements, and Simulink models for traction control and safety logic, the project provided a robust foundation for continued innovation. The use of an eBike plant model in Simulink allowed the team to conduct extensive simulation testing, confirming the functionality and safety of the traction control system before road testing.
